This painting is by Caravaggio (1571-1610) with the title being "The Taking of Christ".  This painting was commissioned in 1602 and is currently in the National Gallery of Ireland.  This painting was missing for over 200 years, found in the residence of Society of Jesus in Dublin.  After cleaning, this very dramatic scene came alive with dark and clear reality. To the right of Jesus is Judas and John.  On the far right, the man holding the lantern, is thought to be a self portrait of the artist.  As with many paintings by this artist, note the drama of hands.  Christ has his hands together in a feeling of resignation.  The military men are seen in armor.  Christ is seen with a red robe.  This painting is typical of the dark lighting the Caravaggio is associated with.  This is truly about the passion of Christ.
